Oceans can seem endless

Our 15-storey floating resort.
Our 15-storey floating resort.

Angela and I just got back from a 12-day cruise of the South Pacific. We traveled from Sydney, Australia to Loyalty Island, New Caledonia, and Fiji. And while snorkelling (not to mention the endless assortment of cruise ship cuisine) was my favourite thing, there's something about standing on a deck of a ship and seeing nothing but water in every direction you look.

Angela and I spent a lot of time just looking at the waves as they smashed up against our 15-storey mammoth ship, the Celebrity Solstice. I could appreciate the early explorers who thought the earth was flat. Gazing out into the South Pacific gave you the feel that a ship might just fall off the edge.

Then there were the fish. No, not the hundreds of species I experienced during my dives, the fish out in the middle of the ocean. The flying fish. At first I thought it was a splash from a wave, but then I saw it again, and again. Fish with wings, exiting the water and actually flying for 50 feet before splashing back into the water. Schools of fish launching themselves out of the water. Why? Pursuing food or trying to escape being pursued. These winged wonders kept me occupied for hours.

And birds, out in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight and no need to touch down on the water. These birds just hovered within the wind currents for miles and miles.

The ocean seems endless
The ocean seems endless.

And the ship itself. It didn't seem to matter how big the waves became. Our floating resort simply eased through the water thanks to state of the art stabilizers and its sheer size.

For anyone who hasn't been on a cruise, it truly is an awe-inspiring experience.

  1. "hovering on the wind currents".... ahhh.... love it..... and i also love the falling "snow" on the screen that began as i read your post. It surprised me and actually brought me into this lovely calm state as i sort of half-focused on it, isn't that funny? Is that something you planned?
